Chisholm Start is designed to provide flexibility to accommodate changing skill requirements.

The Schools TAFE Alliance for Regional Training (START) Trade Training Centre (TTC) project is a new training facility with industry standard equipment to accommodate vocational training activities on behalf of a cluster of 13 schools in the Frankston area. It is designed to provide flexibility to accommodate changing skill requirements.

Our philosophy was to establish and reinforce the need and desire to unify education and work. Workshop areas were positioned to generate curiosity and interest amongst the youth users of the nearby skate park. The form of the START building aims to express the spirit of its use. A precise metallic form resting on slender and expressive structure is also firmly connected to the solid base of the workshop environment.

The ground and the first floors present as a series of concentric circles with various degrees of transparency and accessibility transitioning from: The outer circle
– a purely external public space The middle circle – open plan flexible learning space which facilitates internal circulation and waiting zones The inner circle – meeting and administration rooms with privacy, controlled light access and managed visual connection The core – which facilitates workshops, vertical circulation and service needs. The second and the third floor project over the first and ground floor footprints and the existing access links, opening up an opportunity to introduce highly expressive forms at higher levels as well as exposing the supporting structure. Our philosophy was to establish and reinforce a potential connection between education and recreation.
