Beca engaged Gray Puksand to create a new workspace experience that would celebrate the spirit of Beca from the moment you arrive.  Understanding the importance of amplifying social connections at work we wanted to provide a space that not only aligned with their organisational purpose but also gave their people something to unite around.

Gray Puksand’s design narrative titled “A Place of Possibility,” focuses on the core themes of balance and connection, reflecting Beca’s values of being “Better Together” and “Incredible Made Real.” The design aims to balance natural and made elements, digital and physical experiences and further enhance wellbeing by creating an inclusive space with access to daylight and biophilic elements.

The design highlights a deep connection to place by honouring the historical significance of Melbourne Quarter for the Woiworung People. It embeds an appreciation for First Nations histories and fosters a strong connection to the environment by incorporating sustainable practices such as using low-carbon materials, designing for disassembly, and promoting circular economy initiatives.

The workspace is designed with a focus on achieving WELL certification and incorporates numerous sustainability initiatives throughout the process. Key areas feature natural, authentic materials such as Australian granite, recycled plastic, green ceramics, cork flooring, and spotted gum veneer.

Strategically, Gray Puksand utilised Australian granite and spotted gum to create an authentic arrival experience, guiding guests through the client-facing spaces. Meeting spaces have been named in consultation with the local Woiworung people, and a unique glazing film design, inspired by local flora and fauna, represents a “River of Mists” connected to the Yarra River.

The workspace layout maximizes connection to natural views by positioning open work areas along the perimeter, while meeting spaces and focus areas are placed inboard. The centrally located “heart space” benefits from clear sightlines through the core. Unique design elements include the use of curved glass and polycarbonate screens, cork-clad tiered seating, and recycled plastic for benchtops and splashbacks.
