The emerging design trends of 2024 with Nik Tabain

As our robust project pipeline for 2024 begins to take shape, Gray Puksand’s National Managing Partner Nik Tabain, shares his design outlook for the year ahead.

At Gray Puksand we pride ourselves on leading through design, delivering innovative spaces that challenge the status quo and reflect the current and future needs of our clients.

As our robust project pipeline for 2024 begins to take shape, we sat down with our National Managing Partner Nik Tabain to discuss current architecture and design trends, and his predictions for the future of the industry.

Healthcare design to grow following increased funding

Nik expects activity in the health and science sectors to continue steadily, backed by committed government funding and society’s increased focus on physical and mental health in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“When delivering these types of projects, the design requirements are often incredibly specific to each client and the industry in which they operate. Having an experienced in-house team of specialists is essential to our continued success in this growing sector,” added Nik.

Gray Puksand’s Melbourne studio recently completed a large complex project for the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH). This included a new head office for RMH’s 800 support staff team and the creation of a clinical outpatient level dedicated to dialysis and other critical day procedures. Front of mind for this design was elevating the experience for patients and workers through ample light, soothing tones and strong circulation spaces.

Increasing our presence in the residential sector

As our four national studios continue to grow rapidly, we are increasingly hiring team members who hold robust expertise in residential architecture and interior design. This provides a natural expansion opportunity for Gray Puksand, according to Nik.

“Over the last few years, as our team has grown, many of them have brought significant residential experience in quality, high-end apartment buildings. We see this as a natural transition to provide our design services and commercial experience to the developers that are looking to work within the residential apartment market.”

Future-focused sustainability initiatives will become more widespread

As client demand for sustainable design and construction practices continues to rise, Gray Puksand will make several additions to our existing portfolio of highly sustainable projects.

This follows the announcement of our first Sustainability Action Plan, which outlines our increased cultural and operational focus on sustainability as we work towards achieving greater environmental outcomes in the next three years.

“Above and beyond meeting the industry benchmarks for sustainability, we are going to rigorously test the way we purchase from suppliers and incorporate environmental, social, and governance initiatives across our entire business,” said Nik.

Gray Puksand is set to deliver multiple state-of-the-art education campuses, and office spaces for clients including Medibank, Allianz and Seven Network. Additionally, a stem cell manufacturing and research facility will be delivered in the health and science sector.

“With a varied range of projects and sectors growing rapidly, we believe our diversity will set us apart in the architecture and design industry and allow Gray Puksand to thrive as a business throughout 2024,” concluded Nik.
