Delivering a state-of-the-art construction campus for TAFE NSW Kingswood

A brand new $80 million campus dedicated to construction training is now open at TAFE NSW Kingswood. Designed by Gray Puksand, the campus will fast-track workers directly to the construction sector.

Designed by Gray Puksand and led by Partners Barry Hackett and Stephen Turner, TAFE NSW’s Institute of Applied Technology – Construction Kingswood campus is now open for business. The cutting-edge design stands as a beacon of architectural excellence, poised to address the pressing needs of the construction industry now, and long into the future.

Crafted with state-of-the-art facilities and a forward-thinking curriculum, the institute aims to elevate the skills of the construction workforce to meet the soaring demands of the New South Wales construction boom.

Pioneering the nation’s educational landscape, the training hub offers a comprehensive spectrum of programs, ranging from immersive hands-on experiences to innovative project simulations and virtual reality training.

“Our objective was to create highly functional, accessible architecture. The building can be entirely circumnavigated, permitting views into and out of the spaces within. Central to our design philosophy was adaptability and flexibility, ensuring that the built environment remains conducive to the ever-evolving needs of skills training, without being constrained by physical limitations as technology advances in the years ahead,” said Stephen.

The pavilion’s roof design incorporates translucency, enabling the diffusion of natural light through the central atrium and other key spaces across the building. The design ensures adaptability and versatility with large volume practical spaces supporting adjoining theory space while all being visually linked.

The building’s services are showcased to embrace its inner workings with real-time performance data on display. This provides an interactive educational experience, enabling the building to serve as a dynamic learning tool.

“The facility has been specifically designed to cater to the skills needs of the construction industry now and into the future. It accommodates traditional trades training in large workshop spaces for carpentry, electrical, roof plumbing, and civil construction, while classroom and maker spaces can deliver Micro-credentials and Microskills in areas such as project management, contract administration, building information modelling, and digital skills in construction,” said Brad McAndrews, TAFE NSW Relieving Chief Operating Officer.

The completion of the Institute of Applied Technology at TAFE NSW Kingswood marks a significant addition to the state’s vocational education offering, responding to Australia’s critical need for skilled workers, and contributes to Gray Puksand’s existing national portfolio of multi-award-winning education projects, like Meadowbank TAFE in NSW and Greater Shepparton Secondary College in Victoria.
